Parents, guardians, and health workers should eliminate over-the-counter cough and cold medicine when treating children under the age of two due to “serious and potentially life-threatening side effects” according to the FDA.
The FDA issued the warning after finding there had been no proof that the drugs targeting infants and children brought any relief to the symptoms associated with a cold. In actuality they posed more of a danger to the children due to improper dosages.
Most drug companies have stopped making cough and cold medicine for children under the age of two but many FDA experts have said the medicine is largely ineffective for children under the age of six.
