A man discovered floating face down off of
John Deeks was believed to be without a pulse for nearly an hour when he was dragged ashore by two swimmers and then given mouth-to-mouth by a doctor who happened to be on the beach.
Darren Zimmerman, a station commander at the National Sea Rescue Institution, estimated that Deeks “must have been without a pulse for between 40 and 60 minutes” but somehow managed to survive the incident.
Deeks said he doesn’t recall what happened but believed he may have been hit by a large wave. He was on a ventilator for three days before being taken off and released from the hospital.
