Dead for an Hour, Man Comes Back to Life after Receiving CPR

A man discovered floating face down off of South Africa’s Cape Town coast is doing remarkably well, considering the circumstances.

John Deeks was believed to be without a pulse for nearly an hour when he was dragged ashore by two swimmers and then given mouth-to-mouth by a doctor who happened to be on the beach.

Darren Zimmerman, a station commander at the National Sea Rescue Institution, estimated that Deeks “must have been without a pulse for between 40 and 60 minutes” but somehow managed to survive the incident.

Deeks said he doesn’t recall what happened but believed he may have been hit by a large wave. He was on a ventilator for three days before being taken off and released from the hospital.

The 35-year-old who was born in South Africa but now makes his home in Colliers Wood in south London told the Daily Mail, “It's a miracle I survived.”
