President Barack Obama to Tour Gulf Region, Witness Devastation from Oil Rig Disaster

President Barack Obama will tour the Gulf region and witness the devastation left behind following what could become the worst environmental disasters to ever hit the United States.

Obama will see first-hand the effects of last month’s oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. That explosion caused the rig to sink and ruptured the well, leading to a massive oil spill that has reached the U.S. coastline and continues to pour thousands of gallons of oil into the waters.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has said the oil spill could forever change the way of life for his state’s residents and those who rely on the coat for their way of living. With wildlife being destroyed and the wetlands suffering irreversible damage Louisiana won’t be the only state suffering.

Officials have said there is no immediate answer to stemming the flow of oil that is pouring into the Gulf of Mexico. It could be another 90 days before the leak is stopped and by that point the damage will exceed the Exxon Valdez disaster off the Alaskan coast in 1989.

BP, which operated the Deepwater Horizon rig that suffered catastrophic damage, has said they will attempt to ease the flow of oil from the ruptured well by drilling a relief well but there is no guarantee that will work.

The April 22 explosion has not only poured about 1.6 million gallons of oil into the Gulf but also claimed the lives of 11 oil workers.
