Bobby Fischer Dead at 64
Chess legend Bobby Fischer died of kidney failure in his Iceland home. Fischer was 64 years old.
Gardar Sverrison, a close friend of Fischer, told Agence France-Press (AFP) “I can confirm that he died yesterday in his home due to an illness.”
Einar Einarsson said “He was not a man who wanted to seek medical attention. He didn’t believe in Western medicine.”
Fischer was born in Brooklyn, but later denounced his citizenship due to his hate for the country. Fisher was known for his anti-US and anti-Semitic remarks, despite the fact that his mother was Jewish.
Said to have a higher IQ than Albert Einstein, the chess genius was a champion by age 14 and a grand master by 15. In 1972, Bobby Fisher competed in what is referred to as “the match of the century” where he defeated the reigning champion, Boris Spassky, in Reykjavik. Fischer was 29 years old.
