Galeras Volcano Erupts in Columbia

The Galeras Volcano in southwestern Columbia violently erupted Thursday resulting in the evacuation of several thousand people.

The 14,110 foot volcano started to erupt at 8 pm Thursday night, sending ash miles into the sky.

A photo released by the Columbian Institute of Geology and Mining, Ingeominas, shows how high the ash is flying from the volcano.

The director of Columbia’s Seismological network, Fernanco Gil, told the Associated Press that the Pasto major ordered about 8,000 people to evacuate the city, but “most of the city is not in danger.”

Gil continues to call the eruption the most severe since it’s reactivation in 1989.

“Most of [Galeras’] eruptions are violent and short,” Gil says.  An eruption in 1993 killed nine people, which included five scientists.
