Nicholas Burns to Resign from Secretary of State

Nicholas Burns has announced that he is resigned from his Secretary of State position according to Condoleeza Rice.  Burns was the third-highest State Department official.

Rice reported in Washington today, “He’s simply had a stellar career as a diplomat.”  The 26 year foreign service veteran, Burns was standing next to her when the announcement was made.  “He’s decided it’s the right moment to go back to family concerns, and while it is a sad thing for us, it is certainly something I understand and respect.”

Burns will leave his office in March, but will continue to work on the conclusion of the US-India nuclear agreement.  51 year old Burns intends on pursuing opportunities outside of the government.

The Associated Press reports that William Burns, the US ambassador to Russia, will be replacing Nicolas Burns.  William Burns has experience in Middle East negotiations and as a US ambassador to Jordan.

There is no relation between Nicolas and William Burns.
