BP Acknowledges “Absolute Responsibility” for Oil Spill Cleanup in Gulf of Mexico

BP has said it recognizes its “absolute responsibility” in cleaning up the massive oil spill that now threatens the coastline of several Gulf states as well as the wildlife that relies on the waters.

More than a million gallons of oil have already poured into the Gulf following the April 22 explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon. The explosion sank the BP-operated oil rig and ruptured the well, immediately pouring thousands of barrels into the Gulf of Mexico.

U.S. President Barack Obama had a first-hand look at the oil slick on Sunday and described the scene as “potentially unprecedented.” Obama also placed the responsibility of the cleanup squarely on BP, telling reporters “BP will be paying the bill.”

BP executive Tony Hayward said his company will not shy away from its responsibility, ensuring the oil giant was doing everything it could to contain the environmental disaster.

In addition to destroying wildlife and threatening the U.S. coastline, the Deepwater Horizon explosion claimed the lives of eleven oil workers.
