Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has said he is prepared to hold elections on November 14, a move he hopes will end a deadly standoff with “red-shirt” opposition protesters.
For nearly two months the capital city of Bangkok has been divided as red-shirt supporters have occupied government offices and shopping districts while Vejjajiva’s government declared a state of emergency. That state of emergency eventually led to a deadly clash between government troops and red-shirt supporters with as many as 25 killed and hundreds left injured.
The red-shirt protesters have called Abhisit’s government illegitimate and demanded new elections held and while the PM has apparently accepted those calls protest leader Jatuporn Prompan appeared cautious when saying “We will talk about it and discuss his proposal seriously and decide what our position is. We cannot just reject or accept it immediately.”
Abhisit has said he wants to move closer toward reconciliation and when that was achieved the government would be willing to hold elections.
