Authorities Arrest Man in Connection with Failed Times Square Bombing in New York City

Authorities have arrested a man in connection with the failed bombing attempt in New York City’s Times Square on Saturday evening.

According to reports Faisal Shahzad, a U.S. citizen of Pakistani origin, was detained at John F. Kennedy Airport on Monday as he attempted to board a flight bound for Dubai. Officials are now trying to determine if Shahzad acted alone or if there was a terrorist link.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has said the investigation “is ongoing, as are our attempts to gather useful intelligence, and we continue to pursue a number of leads.” The 30-year-old Shahzad has reportedly told investigators he acted alone in the bombing attempt.

Shahzad, a man who just received U.S. citizenship last year, stands accused of driving his SUV packed with improvised explosives into Times Square, parking the vehicle in the heart of the tourist area and then fleeing on foot.

While authorities have said the bomb appeared amateurish they did note that it had been intended to cause massive casualties. A street vendor in Times Square noticed smoke coming from the vehicle and alerted police who then evacuated the area before bomb experts were able to dismantle the explosive.
