Prosecutors Want Mumbai Gunman Hanged for 2008 Attack
Prosecutors are asking that the lone gunman who survived the Mumbai attacks in 2008 be hanged, saying “would be a mockery of justice if the death penalty is not imposed.”
Those words came from chief prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam who described Mohammad Ajmal Amir Qasab as “an agent of the devil himself, a disgrace to society and the entire human race.” The 22-year-old Pakistani was found guilty on Monday of murder, waging war on India and possessing explosives.
Qasab was among a group of ten gunmen who launched a series of attacks on hotels, restaurants and a train station in Mumbai. Those attacks left 174 people dead including nine of the suspected gunman, leaving only Qasab to face charges.
While prosecutors charged Qasab in the attacks India has blamed the Pakistani-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba for the planning of the attacks as well as training and equipping the terrorists. Pakistan initially denied any of the planning took place on their soil but later acknowledged that the attacks had partially been planned on its territory.
As part of that planning Qasab was instructed on how to carry out the attacks in a manner that would cause large-scale loss of life.
Qasab is expected to be sentenced on Thursday.
