Palestinians Blame Jewish Settlers for Blaze that Damaged Mosque in West Bank
Peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis may have suffered yet another setback after a fire in the West Bank caused serious damage to a mosque.
Palestinians have blamed Jewish settlers for the blaze in Nablus yet Israel has said the fire could have been caused by a short circuit or intentionally set by members of Hamas, a pro-Palestinian group who opposes peace talks with Israel.
Renewed peace talks between the two sides were thought to be on the right track as U.S. envoy to the Middle East George Mitchell returned to the region for proximity talks. Those talks will now likely be shelved once more as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a statement saying “This criminal attack threatens efforts to revive the peace process.”
While Abbas was pointing the finger at Jewish settlers Israeli Trade Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer countered by saying the fire was likely caused by arson, telling Israeli army radio “I have no shadow of doubt their aim was to ignite fire in the region and this is lamentable.”
