Authorities have announced that prosecutor for the suspected murder of Maria
Lauterbach, will not seek the death penalty if Cesar Laurean is arrested in Mexico where he
is believed to be in hiding.
According to District Attorney Dewey Hudson, authorities have “strongly
compelling evidence” that points to Mexico as Laurean’s hiding place.
Hudson has asked the State Department to
arrest Laurean if he is found in Mexico, but says he had “no other
option” but to let go of the death penalty if Laurean is arrested there. Mexico
has a history of refusing to release suspects to the US if they are facing the a death
sentence.
Hudson told
CNN during an interview, “I had to agree not to seek the death penalty. My hands were tied if I wanted to bring him
here to face murder charges. It was very
frustrating and disappointing.”
Cesar Laurean is being charged for the murder of Lance Cpl. Maria
Lauterbach. He body was found on January
11. Her charred remains were buried in a
fire pit in the suspect’s backyard.
The FBI will be circulating matchbooks or business cards printed with
Laurean’s picture throughout Mexico. A Marine’s wanted poster has also been posted
on the FBI’s Most Wanted list offering a $25,000 reward.
