Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton Use South Carolina Debate as Platform for Personal Attacks

In what was supposed to be a debate focusing on how each candidate would lead the country in a new direction what transpired was nothing more than mudslinging and name calling between the Democratic Party’s top two candidates.

Both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton spent the majority of the two-hour debate trying to undermine each other rather than focusing on a course of action they would undertake if they were to be elected.

Obama took shots at Clinton’s history as a “corporate lawyer sitting on the board at Wal-Mart” while he was helping Chicago’s unemployed. Clinton quickly pounced on Obama’s mention of Chicago and quickly pointed out his ties to Antoin “Tony” Rezko who has since been charged with fraud, attempted extortion and money laundering.

The debate continued to deteriorate as Obama called into question Bill Clinton’s tactics in campaigning for his wife, accusing the former president of spreading mistruths and distorting facts. After Hillary quipped “I’m here. He’s not” Obama shot back “Well I can’t tell who I’m running against sometimes.”

Lost in the fray was the third Democratic presidential candidate standing on stage and John Edwards was adamant about expressing his displeasure with the way the debate had turned saying, “Are there three people in this debate, not two.”
