Fred Thompson Drops His Republican Presidential Bid

The Republican presidential race just got a little smaller as former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson dropped his presidential bid on Tuesday after a somewhat lethargic campaign.

Thompson finished a disappointing third in the South Carolina primary, a state many felt he needed if he were to be a serious contender in the Republican race.

In a statement released on Tuesday the once hopeful Thompson said, “Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.”
