A New Twist on an Old Tradition – Parents Send Themselves to Summer Camp
Parent Weekend is a unique three-day summer camp for parents, in which they get to experience what their kids are learning in SuperCamp’s 7-day and 10-day academic and life skills camps.
The academic summer camp, SuperCamp, offers parents of teens and pre-teens a unique chance to experience what their kids are learning in a three-day version of its popular learning and life skills summer program. In the process, parents also discover a lot about themselves in an energizing, emotional and enlightening span of 48 hours.
The parents gain valuable insight into many of the same real-life skills their children learn in their 7-day and 10-day residential youth and teen camps held on U.S. college campuses. From mid-day Friday to graduation on Sunday, parents experience a non-stop sun-up to lights-out course that helps them understand, support and interact with their kids better.
Parents who have attended Parent Weekend feel the benefits will last a lifetime. “It is an absolute must, life-changing experience. You’ll walk away a changed person,” said Morgan Brawner who went to Parent Weekend at Wake Forest University this past summer.
Parent Weekend facilitators engage participants with the same dynamic, interactive Quantum Learning style of teaching that inspires the kids who attend SuperCamp. As Kimberly Spiro-Gaw, who attended Parent Weekend at Cornell in 2007, says, “Jump in and plan on getting wet. Enjoy the ride because it is mapping our children’s future as well as our own.”
Some of the specific skills parents learn about, which are taught in SuperCamp, are Living Above the Line – taking responsibility for one’s actions, the four-part apology, Active Listening, OTFD – a problem-solving technique, and the 8 Keys of Excellence. The program also goes into depth on individual learning styles, to help parents understand and effectively support their children’s academic endeavors.
In 2008, Parent Weekend is offered at Stanford, Cornell, Wake Forest and Cal State San Marcos. SuperCamp will run four grade-specific programs at eight U.S. colleges in 2008, including Youth Forum for students entering grades 4 and 5 next fall, Junior Forum, for those entering grades 6-8, Senior Forum for those entering grades 9-12 and Quantum U for incoming college freshmen.
