PRODUCT LIABILITY LAWYERS INVESTIGATING CASES OF ACCUTANE SIDE EFFECTS

Based on recent medical studies linking use of the popular acne drug, Accutane, to an increased incidence of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, the lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are investigating potential cases against Accutane’s manufacturer and are offering free confidential legal consultations to individuals who suspect their Inflammatory Bowel Disease (including Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease) may be a result of their prior Accutane use.

Accutane and IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease)

Accutane (also known as isotretinoin) was approved by the FDA in 1982 to treat severe acne and has since been used by more than 16 million people.  It is a prescription drug manufactured and marketed by Hoffmann-La Roche.  In the late eighties, reports began linking Accutane to birth defects and suicide.  Since that time Accutane has been linked to additional serious medical conditions.  Most recently, medical studies link Accutane use to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (including Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease). Accutane has been associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease in patients without prior history of intestinal disorders and has been reported to persist after Accutane treatment has stopped.  On June 29, 2009, Hoffmann-La Roche announced a nationwide Accutane recall.

Accutane and IBD Lawsuits

At the time of the Accutane recall, Roche had awarded over $33 million in lawsuits alleging that Accutane caused Inflammatory Bowel Disease.  Since the June 2009 Accutane recall, the number of Accutane lawsuits has continued to rise.  Currently, the company is facing over 1,000 lawsuits by Accutane users who contracted Inflammatory Bowel Disease. To date, six jury verdicts have required Roche to pay almost $56 million in damages to victims harmed by Accutane.
