Airports in Ireland and Scotland Closed Due to Ash Cloud from Iceland Volcano

Airports across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland have halted flights due to a new ash cloud caused by a volcanic eruption in Iceland. The flight cancellations have led to thousands of passengers being left stranded with no word on when the situation will clear.

Air officials have now advised passengers to contact airports to learn the status of their flights as travel over Glasgow, Prestwick and Derry has been shut down as have flights over Dublin, Belfast and Edinburgh.

The Civil Aviation Authority has said the situation involving the ash cloud could change hourly but until they feel there is no danger the airspace will remain closed.

Last month flights over Europe were cancelled for six days as a massive ash cloud from the same volcano made flight travel too risky. Those fears were focused on particles in the ash jamming plane engines and potentially causing engine failure.
