Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu Meets with U.S. Envoy George Mitchell Ahead of Scheduled Peace Talks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has met with U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell ahead of what is supposed to be “proximity talks” designed to bring peace between Israel and Palestinians.

There have been no reports concerning what was covered between Netanyahu and Mitchell but the subject of Israeli settlement construction in East Jerusalem was almost certainly discussed. That has been the sticking point for Palestinian protests yet Israel has refused to back down from its right to build on what they consider their land.

While there will be no direct talks between the two sides Mitchell is hoping to facilitate the peace process by meeting with the leaders involved. Mitchell is due to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday and may still meet with the Palestinian Liberation Organization.

Abbas has stressed the need for the talks to focus on the future Palestinian state and more specifically the borders of that state. Palestinians have called for East Jerusalem to be their new capital yet Israel has maintained that the territory belongs to them.
