Somali Pirates Hijack Russian Oil Tanker, Warship Heading Toward Area

A Russian oil tanker bound for China has been hijacked by a band of Somali pirates who are now expected to demand a large ransom for the cargo and 23 crew members now being held.

According to reports the Moscow University had been heading toward China when it was attacked by pirates about 560 miles off the Somali coast. The pirates managed to board the 96,000 ton tanker and are said to be demanding a multi-million dollar ransom for its release.

The 23 crew members are said to have locked themselves in the ship’s radar room.

News of the pirate attack sparked a Russian warship to head toward the vessel but it is doubtful any use of force will implemented to free the crew.
