Dow Drops 200 Points As Recession Worries Encourage New Round of Selling

Weak guidance from Apple and ongoing recession fears are pushing US stocks lower by another 200 points in early action, despite expectations of another big cut in the fed funds rate next week and fairly upbeat earnings and commentary from US companies. Texas Instruments, Pfizer, United Technologies, Norfolk Southern, St. Jude Medical, and Coach all topped the Street's profit estimates. Problems, however, continue to plague Motorola. In light economic news, lower mortgage rates are encouraging a wave of refinancings, but Treasuries are much higher as the drop in stocks encourages flight-to-safety buying. Overseas, hawkish talk from the European Central Bank is hurting stocks in Europe, but Asia rallied and was aided by the Fed's surprise rate cut.

In early morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 206.47, or 1.72 percent, to 11,764.72. Broader stock indicators also declined. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 28.12, or 2.15 percent, to 1,282.38, and the Nasdaq composite index slid 53.87, or 2.35 percent, to 2,238.40.

Bond prices rose sharply, as investors' search for safer places for their money. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, fell to 3.32 percent from 3.41 percent late Tuesday. The dollar was mixed against other major currencies.
