On January 18, Geno Lewis, Community Relations Director of Narconon of Georgia drug rehab center attended a “Sleep Over” event held at the Rosa Parks Recreational Center. The event, sponsored by Atlanta City Council Members C.T. Martin and Joyce Shepard, was held for 75 kids ages 8 to 17 and attended by recording artist Neo, Hot Sauce from AND 1 and gospel singer Kent Jones.
The theme of the event was “Pull Up Your Pants” in reference to the “Sagging Pants” ordinance introduced by Council Member C.T. Martin. The proposed ordinance restricts the wearing of sagging pants in public. The kids in attendance learned that the look of the sagging pants actually came from the prison yard - prisoners without a belt were unable to keep their pants up and hence they “sagged”. The look of the sagging pants came straight from the prison yard to the streets about 6 years ago. Many kids in attendance had no idea that this look continues to represent drugs and criminal behavior and wore the sagging pants as an effort to look in style. In order to reinforce the message that youth dressing and behaving in a positive manner leads to success, Mr. Lewis passed out the Way to Happiness booklets, a common sense moral code.
Most of the kids arrived to the event with their pants sagging. After an evening of positive discussions, they all had paid heed to the message “Pull your pants up” and walked out neatly dressed and proud.
Mr. Lewis stated, "If we can teach children self-respect and pride, they don't have to try drugs to fit in with the crowd. They can be the leaders for a drug-free society."
