Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty Accused of Perjury

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his chief of staff Christine Beatty faces charges of lying under oath after being questioned about their alleged affair. Their affair first came to light about two police officers took out a lawsuit after claiming they were followed due to their investigation about unlawful and unethical conduct by Kilpatrick. The “unethical” conduct included his affair with Beatty.

He and Beatty, both 37, were questioned about the affair but both denied having any romantic involvement with one another. Evidence in the form of text messages were read; some sexually explicit.

“I’m madly in love with you,” Kilpatrick wrote at one point.

“I hope you feel that way for a long time. In case you haven’t noticed, I am madly in love with you, too!” Beatty replied.

Another message from Beatty read, “And, did you miss me, sexually?” Kilpatrick said, “Hell yeah! You couldn’t tell. I want some more.”

The mayor released a statement requesting privacy for the “profoundly embarrassing” situation.

Kilpatrick and Beatty could face up to 15 years in prison for lying under oath.
