TrizCom has signed Cooper Wellness, which sponsors residence programs devoted to health and well being, as a new client. Affiliated with the Cooper Aerobics Center, the Wellness group concentrates on health awareness and offers weekend and six-day programs packed with physical activity, nutritious eating and lectures to help with weight loss, stress management and preventing illness.
“Whether a client spends two or six days with us, we design a plan organized around life-enhancing concepts for them,” says Todd Whitthorne, executive director at Cooper Wellness. “Our lifestyle modification programs offer practical advice and examples to change habits for the better permanently.” Thousands of individuals have attended Cooper Wellness programs in the last 25 years to take control of their health and lose weight.
Created in 1985 by Dr. Kenneth Cooper, who started a fitness revolution when he introduced the practice of aerobics in 1968, the medically-supervised Wellness programs work with clients to meet their personal goals, address health needs, and find time for exercise and wholesome eating. For people with a weekend to spare, the Two-Day Taste of Wellness includes exercise sessions and cooking classes. That healthy getaway has attracted busy adults of all ages and is often shared with a spouse or friend.
For a lengthier stay, the “Six-Day Wellness is a life-changing experience and a program for long-term success,” says Dr. Riva Rahl, medical director of Cooper Wellness and staff physician specializing in internal medicine at Cooper Clinic. “Our goal is to provide all the knowledge needed to live a good life.” The program, which starts with comprehensive physical at Cooper Clinic, relies on the most up-to-date health information to help clients develop sensible plans. The six-day program frequently includes talks given by Dr. Kenneth Cooper.
During a Cooper Wellness experience, clients choose from a variety of group classes--including yoga, Pilates and indoor cycling. They receive one-on-one training and have access to the award-winning Cooper Fitness Center. That facility is home to a one-mile outdoor track, tennis courts, two heated pools, a whirlpool and sauna.
Susie Kania, exercise physiologist at Cooper Wellness, says program fitness activities and topics include personal assessments, exercising for weight loss, strength training, healthy walking, stretching and avoiding injuries. Kania makes exercise recommendations, while working with clients' medical restrictions. Certified by the American College of Sports Medicine and holding a master’s degree in exercise physiology, she gives presentations on strength training, heart rate monitoring and conditioning at home.
In Wellness programs, healthy meals are provided and served in a joint dining room-demonstration kitchen. Fat content and calories are monitored by Kathy Duran-Thal, a registered dietitian, trained chef and cook book author. Food topics and activities include nutrition counseling, eating for weight loss, preparing healthy meals at home, tips for grocery shopping and ordering off a menu wisely.
Cooper Wellness helps clients achieve well-being by teaching them ways to make lasting behavioral changes. After hearing lectures and attending workshops led by a team of experts, clients leave the program with fresh knowledge about setting goals, motivation techniques, maintaining behavior changes, managing stress, preventive medicine and interpreting what medical results mean.
People who have attended Wellness programs are on the road to living “a long and healthy life to the fullest,” according to Dr. Kenneth Cooper. Founded in 1970, the Cooper Institute focuses on preventative medicine and research, and is home to the largest collection of health and exercise data in the world. Dr. Cooper's aerobics are so widely practiced that in Brazil running is often referred to as "coopering" or "doing the cooper," and the national fitness test in Hungary is called the Cooperteszt.
