Russian Forces Storm Oil Tanker Seized by Somali Pirates, Free 23 Crew Members

Russian forces stormed an oil tanker seized by Somali pirates, securing the vessel and freeing the 23 crew members who had locked themselves in the ships radar room.

As the Russian warship Marshal Shaposhnikov approached the oil tanker the pirates opened fire, igniting a shootout that eventually left one pirate dead. With the crew having locked themselves in a safe room the pirates realized they would have no alternative but to surrender.

Russian forces then took control of the Moscow University, arresting ten pirates and freeing the crew. The detained pirates were being transported back to Moscow where they will face charges.

The Russian shipping company that owns the oil tanker released a statement reading “Pirates have released the tanker... All crew on board the tanker are alive and well.”
