EU Police Officers Arrest War Crimes Suspect in Kosovo

European Union police officers have arrested a suspected war crimes suspect in Kosovo after raiding a house in the capital city of Pristina.

According to reports the arrested man was identified as Sabit Geci, a member of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). Geci is suspected of torturing and mistreating prisoners at the Kukes detention facility in northern Albania between April and June 1999.

The arrest is said to be the first related to war crimes committed on Albanian soil. With the arrest by EU police officers the case against Geci will likely be carried out by the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague.

The KLA, made up primarily of ethnic Albanians, sought separation from Yugoslavia which led to the Kosovo War between 1998 and 1999. During that period more than 10,000 people were killed as the head of Yugoslavia’s government, Slobodan Milosevic, used brutal force to suppress the insurgency.
