Teen Expert on Crusade Against Bullying
Bobbi DePorter, noted authority on teen learning and life skills, is reaching out to parents of teens to tell them how to deal with the growing issue of bullying
While teen bullying is difficult to stop, one teen expert is telling parents how they can prevent a tragedy in their home as the result of bullying.
Bobbi DePorter, co-founder and president of SuperCamp, middle school and high school summer enrichment programs for teens and pre-teens, is taking her message to parents via television, radio and Internet interviews.
"One of the major problems students who are bullied is that they are humiliated and embarrassed to the point where they keep it to themselves," says Ms. DePorter. "This humiliation can lead to depression and, as we're seeing in some cases, to suicide."
Parents of some of the teens who have taken their own life have revealed that they weren't aware of their child's problem. Ms. DePorter indicates that their are steps parents can take to build the trust in their relationships with their teens that will open the door to communication and alleviate a tragic outcome.
Ms. DePorter calls the strategy building a home court advantage. It's something she and her teen summer camp staff do at SuperCamp every summer. In her media interviews, Ms. DePorter outlines a four-part strategy for building a home court advantage.
Ms. DePorter also indicates that students who attend her learning and life skills academic summer camps gain communication skills, confidence and self-esteem, all of which contribute to help deal with bullying in a rational manner.
