Pulling an upset win in Iowa, Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee may have felt a little more emboldened. However, his exuberance may have lost some luster with the resurgence of John McCain's popularity on the road to the Republican presidential nomination. McCain's win in South Carolina sent Fred Thompson packing from the campaign Huckabee is showing to be in fourth place in the coming primary in Florida.
While his campaign refuses to call Florida a must-win state, he may decided to head west prior to the election in Florida, to states where he has a better showing at the polls. According to poll information published at usaelectionpolls.com, Huckabee is in fourth place in Florida behind Rudy Giuliani, McCain and Mitt Romney. Nationally, he is barely holding onto second place with 20 percent. McCain leads with 29 percent and Romney has 19 percent.
How the support of former candidate Fred Thompson will be divided probably will not be known until after February 5 Super Tuesday primaries. Many of these states, including California and New York offer many more delegates at stake than the earlier states. Huckabee may head out to these delegate-rich states ahead of the pack, hoping to score additional points among voters.
He jumped on the proposed economic stimulus package recently announced by the president saying that while he supports the short term tax refunds to give the economy a boost, he firmly believes it is also going to require long-term relief available only through in income tax overhaul to keep the economy healthy.
