CBS 2 Chicago news anchor Randy Salerno was killed Thursday night in a snowmobiling accident. Eagle River, Wisconsin police say they received a call about the fatal accident around 11:30 p.m. last night.
Salerno, 45, was snowmobiling with friends. He was apparently riding as a passenger on one of the vehicles when the driver lost control and hit several trees. Authorities say alcohol was a factor in the accident.
“Alcohol and speed are believed to be a factor in the crash,” said the Vilas County police department in a statement.
Police did not identify Salerno or the driver, but the news station reported Salerno’s death on their website. The driver of the snowmobile suffered injuries.
Salerno was an anchor with Roseanne Tellez for the morning news from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. and news at 11 a.m. He began working for channel two news Chicago in September 2004. Prior to that, he worked at WGN channel 9.
He is survived by his wife, Irene, and their 3 children.
