Randy Salerno Snowmobile Death Leads to Homicide Charge Against Friend

Chicago’s Channel 2 morning new anchor Randy Salerno was killed on Thursday after the snowmobile he was traveling on went off its path and slammed into several trees. Now Salerno’s life-long friend, Scott Hirschey, may be facing felony charges related to the death after police ruled alcohol played a role in the crash.

Salerno had been vacationing with a group of friends, including Hirschey, in northern Wisconsin. On Thursday night the group had gone to a local tavern and after leaving they each got on their own snowmobile. According to reports, Hirschey was having trouble with his snowmobile so Salerno allowed him to drive his while he sat on the back.

At some point on the way back to their lodgings Hirschey lost control of the snowmobile and it slammed into several trees. Salerno, who had been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, died on the scene while Hirschey sustained serious injuries and was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital.

On Friday police arrested Hirschey and charged him with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. The felony offense carries a sentence up to 25 years.

The 45-year-old Salerno was married and had three children.
