MLB Schedule Friday May 7: Red Sox and Yankees Open Series in Boston as Josh Beckett and Phil Hughes Square Off
The MLB schedule for Friday includes the start of baseball’s biggest rivalry as the Boston Red Sox host the New York Yankees in a three-game series. While those two teams battle it out the AL East leading Tampa Bay Rays will be in Oakland to face the AL West leading A’s in a weekend series. In the National League the St. Louis Cardinals will look to get back on track after dropping three straight as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates in a NL Central showdown.
There has been no hotter division than the AL East as four of the five teams have winning streaks of at least four games. One of those streaks will come to an end on Friday as the Red Sox host the Yankees. Boston’s bats have returned but they’ll need a strong pitching performance from Beckett as Hughes has put together a great start to the season at 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA.
Both the Red Sox and Yankees are chasing the Tampa Bay Rays, owners of baseball’s best record at 21-7. The Rays have rattled off five straight wins and have a 1 ½ game advantage in the division. They’ll be facing a surprising Oakland A’s squad that has taken advantage of a weak AL West to grab a share of the division lead.
Albert Pujols had a rough series in Philadelphia and he’ll look to return to his old form on Friday night as his St. Louis Cardinals try to snap a three-game losing streak against the Pittsburgh Pirates. While the Cardinals have dropped three in a row the Pirates have won three straight and are now 4 ½ back of the Cardinals in the NL Central.
