GenCorp’s business unit, Aerojet, along with NASA and the Lockheed Martin run Orion industry team have launched the first integrated Orion launch abort system flight test.
The test took place in New Mexico at the U.S. Army’s White Sands Missile Range. The test brought over 1,100 attendees including space industry leaders, NASA center dignitaries and Congressional reps.

Lockheed Martin, the primary contractor for the Orion crew exploration vehicle for NASA, led the development effort for the launch abort system. The Orion spacecraft contains a crew module for crew and cargo transport, a service module for propulsion, electric power and fluids storage and a spacecraft adapter for securing it to the launch vehicle. The launch abort system is an innovative technology for crew escape in the case of an emergency on the launch pad or even during flight.
