Chicago’s commuter rail system chief Philip Pagano died on Friday after stepping in front of a speeding train in what is being described as an apparent suicide.
Pagano had been executive director of Chicago’s Metra rail system since 1990 but earlier this year he became the subject of an investigation into financial irregularities. That investigation was launched after it was learned Pagano had received a $56,000 “bonus.” Metra employees are not awarded bonuses, a fact that led to the investigation.
Pagano had been on paid leave but was due to appear before the board of the Metra system on Friday to learn his fate. Before that meeting ever occurred Pagano placed a copy of a manual detailing procedures for handling a suicide on the railway in his pocket and stepped in front of an oncoming train near his home.
