Indiana Boys Mimic Movie, End Up with Tongues Stuck to Flagpole

Sometimes life imitates art, and sometimes that can cause a great deal of pain, just ask Gavin Dempsey and James Alexander, a pair of Indiana fourth-graders who stuck their tongues to a frozen flagpole and learned they really would stick.

The two had been on flag duty at Jackson Elementary School on Friday when the idea popped into their heads. Dempsey said he had doubts about a scene in the movie “A Christmas Story” in which a boy stuck his tongue to a flagpole on a dare and had to be helped by the fire department.

It didn’t take long for the two to discover a tongue and cold metal are a bad combination as they were left with bloody tongues. When asked about her son’s decision to attempt the stunt James Alexander’s mother said “I can't believe he did it, but they learned their lesson.”

At least the treatment for a bloody tongue isn’t so bad, James said he plans to eat a lot of ice cream to ease the pain.
