Airports Across Spain Shut Down Due to Volcanic Ash Cloud

The ash clouds produced by Iceland’s volcano continues to paralyze air travel as Spain has been forced to shut down 19 airports across the country, stranding thousands of passengers and diverting traffic.

With the ash cloud drifting across Western Europe officials quickly halted take-offs from a number of airports, among them Spain’s second biggest, Barcelona.

According to reports the ash cloud stretches 1,200 miles and has forced a number of flights to be diverted as pilots were rerouted north and south of the massive cloud. Spain’s National airport management agency Aena said they would continue to monitor the situation but as it stood , in addition to Barcelona, Girona, Sabadell, Bilbao, San Sebastian, Vitoria, Zaragoza, Huesca, Pamplona, Logrono, Santiago, La Coruna, Vigo, Asturias, Santander, Leon, Valladolid, Burgos and Salamanca would have their airports shut down.

As Spain takes the hit now Portugal and France are preparing to do the same as officials watch the ash cloud continue to work its way over Europe.
