Suspect Arrested in Susannah Chase Murder

More than ten years after Susannah Chase was raped and murdered, police have arrested the man they believe is responsible for her death. On Sunday Boulder, Colorado police announced they arrested 38-year-old Diego Olmos-Alcalde and charged him with first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping and first-degree sexual assault.

“The department is ecstatic over this,” said Police Chief Mark Beckner.

On December 21, 1997 23-year-old Chase was walking home alone after having an argument with her boyfriend. Before she could make it home, she was beaten with a baseball bat, raped and left bleeding. She later died of the injuries.

The University of Colorado student’s murder has remained a cold case until now. Authorities say new DNA evidence and other information they did not make public lead to Sunday’s arrest.

Police say they learned the DNA from the case matched a profile in Wyoming on Thursday. Olmos-Alcalde served time in the Wyoming jail in 2000. He was arrested on Saturday after breaking his parole. While in jail, Olmos-Alcalde was arrested and charged in Chase’s murder. He is being held on $5 million bail.

Chase’s parents released a statement about the arrest. “As you might imagine out emotions have run the gamut since we first heard of the DNA match with Susannah’s case,” said Chase. “We are delighted that a suspect have been identifies and apprehended,” said Hal and Julie Chase.
