At least eleven people have died and another 83 remain trapped after a pair of explosions at a Russian mine in western Siberia.
Officials have said 20 of those who are now trapped are actually rescuers who entered the Raspadskaya mine after the initial explosion. That first blast occurred while more than 300 miners were underground and is said to be responsible for the eleven deaths.
Shortly after the first explosion a rescue team was sent in to the mine to try and locate those who were unable to make it out and about three hours later the mine was hit by a second explosion. All contact with that rescue team has been lost and officials are now trying to ventilate the mine to avoid a third explosion.
The explosions were being blamed on a build-up of methane gas and until the air is safe the rescue efforts will remain on hold. Speaking about the situation Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said, “It is clear that the situation at the mine is very hard. I would say that it is tragic. The saddest thing is that we cannot send in additional rescuers now as it is very dangerous due to the lack of ventilation.”
