U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has said there is evidence that the failed car bombing in New York’s Times Square was planned and likely financed by the Pakistani Taliban.
The militant group claimed responsibility for the attempt earlier this month but those claims were rejected by the United States.
Those feelings were reversed after authorities detained Faisal Shazhad and linked the 30-year-old Connecticut man to the attempted bombing. Shazhad was attempting to board a flight from New York’s JFK airport destined for Dubai when he was arrested.
Officials have since learned that Shazhad, who is cooperating with investigators, had received bomb-making training in Pakistan. Holder said the investigators have been able to gather enough information from Shazhad to implicate the Pakistani Taliban, telling ABC’s This Week “We know that they helped facilitate it. We know that they probably helped finance it, and that [Shahzad] was working at their direction.”
