With a lagging position in the Florida primary polls and a dwindling supply of campaign cash, Mike Huckabee, former Arizona Governor is happy for the support from Duncan Hunter following his exit from the Republican race for president. Although Hunter is only polling at about one percent, in the tight GOP race for the nomination, Huckabee is glad for every bit of support he can garner.
While in a virtual tie in first place with Rudy Giuliani in national polls posted at usaelectionpolls.com, Huckabee saw his chances in Florida fading fast as John McCain and Mitt Romney moved to a solid first and second place respectively. McCain's 30 percent and Romney's 28 percent overshadowed Huckabee's 14 percent, enough to send him on an early trip to states holding their primaries on Super Tuesday, February 5.
In Florida, voters seemed to more interested in the economy and the war in Iraq, topics most talked about by the two leading candidates and Huckabee's cash reserves being low may have helped him make the decision to move onto what he sees as greener pastures. Hunter's departure, along with an earlier exodus by Tom Tancredo and Fred Thompson, the field narrowed to just five candidates.
Many political observers believe that Giuliani's decision to stay out of the early states is to blame for his loss of support in Florida, and despite being tied in national polls with Huckabee at 21 percent, he could be the next victim leaving the race. Huckabee is seen as the most likely recipient of some of his supporters, which could help replenish his funds.
