Venezuela Bank Robbery Leads to Hostage Situation

Four gunmen held more than 30 hostages inside a Altagracia de Orituco, Venezuela bank after their robbery plan failed. The standoff began Monday morning and lasted nearly two days before the gunmen reached an agreement with authorities.

The gunmen were allowed to leave with five hostages in an ambulance. The vehicle was backed up to the door of Banco Provincial and the men jumped inside. One of the hostages was made to drive the ambulance. The men held file folders and paper bags in front of their faces so they could not be identified.

Hostages inside the bank used their cell phones to call family on Monday. They also held posters up to the window saying things such as “We are in real danger. They can kill us. Please Help.”

The gunmen allowed food and water to be delivered.

Authorities say security cameras caught images of the gunmen before they were cut off. The images are being looked at by officers. Justice Minister Ramon Rodriguez Chacin said the four men were all in their early 20’s. Chacin said they were taking drugs.  No injuries or deaths have been reported.
