Turkish Opposition Leader Deniz Baykal Resigns after Video Surfaces of Alleged Affair

Turkish opposition leader Deniz Baykal, head of the secularist Republican People’s Party (CHP), has resigned from his position after a video began circulating that allegedly proved he had been having an affair.

Baykal announced his resignation on Monday but insisted he was a victim of a plot by the government, saying “"This is not a sex tape, this is a conspiracy.” Baykal has said he is being targeted by the governing AK Party because of his adamant stance against the constitutional reforms proposed by the government.

He went on to say, “If this has a price, and that price is the resignation from CHP leadership, I am ready to pay it. My resignation does not mean running away, or giving in.”

The 71-year-old Baykal and the woman in the tape, a CHP politician as well, are both married.
