Margaret Truman Dies at 83

The only child of former United States president Harry S. Truman died today at the age of 83. Margaret Truman Daniel died in Chicago after a brief illness.

Daniel is the author of 32 books, including a biography of her mother, Bess. Before she began writing, Daniel pursued a musical career. Her father was proud of her work as a singer and wrote a nasty letter to a music critic Paul Hume, who said Margaret “cannot sing very well.”

“I have never met you, but if I do, you’ll need a new nose and plenty of beefsteak and perhaps a supporter below,” Truman wrote in the letter.

Margaret married Clifton Daniel in 1956. He worked as an assistant to the foreign news editor of the New York Times when they first married. Clifton later became the magazine’s editor.

Margaret and Clifton had four children. Clifton died in 2000. Margaret is survived by three of the four children.
