Elena Kagan Nominated by President Barack Obama for Supreme Court

Solicitor-General Elena Kagan has been nominated by U.S. President Barack Obama to become the 112th justice to the Supreme Court, replacing the retiring Justice John Paul Stevens.

It will now be up to the Senate to confirm Kagan but the 50-year-old former Harvard Law School dean could find some detractors in the Republican Party. Despite never having served as a judge Obama said Kagan would bring excellence, independence and passion to the post.

While never serving as a judge Kagan did clerk for a U.S. Court of Appeals judge as well as for former Justice Thurgood Marshall.
