Top NYSE Stock Earnings Surprises (STP, DF, TSN, DYN)

Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (ADR) (NYSE:STP) said Monday it expects first-quarter revenue of $580 million to $590 million, ahead of the forecast of $546 million in a survey of analysts by FactSet Research. Suntech expects to book a foreign exchange loss of approximately $24 million to $25 million, and a gain of approximately $2 million to $3 million from hedging activities. "We are pleased to see extremely strong demand in the first quarter," the company said. "With robust demand in incumbent solar markets and rapid growth in a host of emerging markets, we expect this environment to continue deep into 2010."

Dean Foods Company (NYSE:DF) posted a softer first-quarter profit and suspended its full-year outlook on Monday due to weakness in its dairy business. For the recent period, the Dallas-based food processor said it earned $43.2 million, or 24 cents a share, compared to $76.2 million, or 48 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Net sales rose to about $3 billion from $2.7 billion. Earnings from continuing operations were 23 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet Research were looking for earnings of 28 cents a share, on average. For the second quarter, Dean Foods predicted earnings in the range of 23 cents to 28 cents a share, versus the Wall Street consensus of 41 cents a share.

Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE:TSN) said Monday it swung to a second-quarter profit of $159 million, or 42 cents a share, from a loss of $119 million, or 32 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Excluding a charge of 4 cents a share for losses on notes purchased, the Springdale, Ark. meat producer earned 46 cents a share. Revenue increased to $6.92 billion, from $6.31 billion. Wall Street analysts expected earnings of 34 cents a share, and revenue of $6.6 billion, according to a survey by FactSet Research. Looking ahead, Tyson expects seasonal demand for chicken to improve in the second half of the year. The companay said it does not expect a significat change in the fundamentals of its beef business.

Dynegy Inc. (NYSE:DYN) said Monday that it swung to a first-quarter net profit of $145 million, or 24 cents a share, from a loss of $335 million, or 40 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue for the quarter declined 5.1% to $858 million. Analysts polled by FactSet had been expecting a loss of 12 cents a share.
