Early Results Show Aquino with Large Lead over Estrada in Philippine Presidential Election

According to figures released by the Commission on Elections Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino has generated a significant lead in the Philippine presidential election, holding a 15% advantage over his closest rival, Joseph Estrada.

Aquino reportedly has 40% of the vote with 38% of the ballots counted, a clear lead over Estrada’s 25.76% total.

The son of former President Corazon Aquino, Benigno currently holds the position of Vice Chairman of the Liberal Party but was encouraged to make a run for the presidency following the death of his mother in 2009.

While Aquino currently holds a sizeable lead in the polls there remains a large number of votes that remain to be counted as an estimated 75% of the 50 million registered voters were said t have cast a ballot.
