Cooper Wellness Offers Mini and Maxi Programs for Healthy Stay-Overs
Cooper Wellness teaches ways to start toning up for a long and happy life through two residence programs devoted to maximizing health and wellness. As part of the renowned Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas, the Wellness group hosts medically-supervised, exercise and nutrition stays.
“We help our clients learn to modify their behavior through a variety of exercise sessions and nutrition and cooking classes, and by providing the latest health information,” says Todd Whitthorne, executive director at Cooper Wellness.
A plan called Two-Day Taste of Wellness is a weekend break that includes physical activity, wholesome meals and cooking classes, and can be shared with a spouse or friend. The two days are structured and busy, and offer the chance to take exercise classes and attend lectures about stress management, sleep, relationships and ways to make lifestyle changes. A cooking demonstration provides recipes for easy-to-prepare dishes and advice on what to order in restaurants. A wholesome, delicious dinner is served afterward. The two-day program ends late Saturday afternoon so clients can enjoy dinner out on the town, using the tips they learned.
For people with more time, the Six-Day Wellness is a program aimed at long-lasting success. “Give us a week and we’ll help change your life,” says Whitthorne. “Our goal is to provide you with knowledge needed to live well.” The program includes an optional physical at Cooper Clinic early in the week. Eighteen exercise and lifestyle classes are offered, along with a couple of one-on-one sessions with a certified personal trainer. Personal exercise plans incorporating the latest health data are customized to clients' needs. Lectures cover optimal nutrition and eating well, medical lectures and goal setting to facilitate lifestyle changes. Vitamin and supplement use is discussed. Discussion is encouraged within the classes--which typically include 10 and 20 people.
In the Six-Day program, cooking demonstrations offer wholesome, take-home recipes. Three classes with a registered dietitian and trained chef explain up-to-date nutrition guidelines and what can be eaten healthfully at home, in the office and at restaurants. Over the six days, clients dine out for breakfast and dinner with a dietitian, who provides pointers. The dietitian is also present at breakfast and lunch daily to answer questions and give advice. Additionally, a psychologist will talk about how emotions affect eating.
A Cooper Wellness life coach works with Six-Day program clients to help them develop five-year plans. A professional counselor assists in identifying barriers to health and happiness. A podiatrist gives suggestions on appropriate exercise shoes. Participants learn why and how to use a heart-rate monitor. A team of medical experts provides advice on cardiac health, understanding blood work and aging gracefully.
Most of the highly trained Wellness staff have graduate degrees, and many have doctorates in medicine and related sciences. The Six-Day Wellness program often features talks on topics in 21st Century Medicine, given by Cooper Institute founder Dr. Kenneth Cooper, known as the father of aerobics.
Peg Williams, a client of Cooper Wellness’ Six-Day program lost 120 pounds in the year that followed her stay. She says, “At Cooper, they showed me how to eat right, gave me guidance and motivated me to exercise, and even showed me how to cook. The Cooper Wellness program has made a huge change in my life, and I can't thank them enough".
During Six-Day stays, a number of additional services are available. For instance, most clients add a physical exam to their Wellness experience. Participants can take advantage of the clinic’s medical expertise. Sessions can be arranged with a personal trainer at the award-winning Cooper Fitness Center and lessons with professionals in basketball, boxing, martial arts, Pilates, running, soccer and swimming can be scheduled.
The luxurious Cooper Spa, located on the campus, offers massages, facials, manicures, pedicures and body treatments for a fee. Skincare products are also available. Clients have access to services offered by Cooper Clinic Dermatology, including a full-body, skin-cancer exam, Botox and Dysport, laser treatments and dermal fillers.
Cooper Aerobics Center is located in the heart of North Dallas and convenient to both Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field Airport. Clients who live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area can commute from home if they like. Out of town guests can stay at the Cooper Guest Lodge--a 62-room, Southern Colonial-style inn on the grounds of Cooper Aerobics Center.
Susie Kania, exercise physiologist for Cooper Wellness, says “between our many workouts, classes, lectures and delicious meals, expect to meet lots of new people during your stay at Cooper Wellness.”
