Opiate Addiction Among U.S. Troops Reaches An All Time High

Most people are opposed to sending our troops to the Middle East because they do not agree with the war. But what if your son or daughter or husband or wife came back from their tour with a nasty heroin habit? Well that is exactly what is happening to hundreds of military personnel after they came back from being deployed to Afghanistan – the heroin Mecca. Heroin addiction can strike anyone at any time, but are we sending our men and women into the lion’s den?

Recent reports from Washington indicate that there may definitely be a correlation. In fact, the number of soldiers that have enrolled in drug and alcohol rehabs for opiate addiction has jumped almost 500% since 2004. Despite people’s view on the war, whether right, wrong or indifferent, something has to be done to protect our soldiers from succumbing to a debilitating heroin addiction problem.

It comes as no surprise that drug addiction is one of the biggest problems to hit our country in decades. More children are abusing drugs than ever before. Methadone Clinics, one of the only government-backed remedies for heroin addiction, is creating lifelong addicts as well and tens of thousands of children are inheriting their mother’s drug addiction in the womb. The only real way to handle this national crisis is to focus on drug education and rehabilitation.

Narconon Louisiana is one such drug and alcohol rehab that has answered this cry for help from many heroin addicts. Since this rehab opened it’s doors in 2006, they have graduated over 200 clients and maintained a 76% success rate for permanent recovery. Despite being different than most rehabs, Narconon Louisiana does not subscribe to the idea that addiction is a disease, this facility has maintained that people do not have to suffer from an addiction for the rest of their lives. There are several different components to the Narconon program.

While enrolled in the program, clients work one on one with a counselor to figure out what problem drugs and/or alcohol was a solution for. Once that problem is isolated and handled, they no longer have to resort to these substances to get through life. In addition to handling why a person started abusing drugs and/or alcohol in the first place, Narconon Louisiana employs a unique sauna detoxification program. Here, clients are able to rid their bodies of the harmful toxins that cause cravings. Cravings are often times the biggest reason someone cannot stay clean for long periods of time.

For those that are risking their lives for their beliefs and for the well being of their fellow man,
heroin addiction is no way to go out.  No matter the reason for the increased amount of opiate addicts in the military, it is vital to help them shed their addiction.
