British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced he will step down from his position as Labour Party leader in hopes that his party can establish a coalition with the Liberal Democrats and form a new government.
The move is seen as necessary to avoid a Conservative government from taking shape. While the Conservatives won the most seats in Thursday’s election they failed to win a majority and have been in talks with the Liberal Democrats for days trying to form a coalition.
Liberal Democrats have since said they would like to hold formal talks with the Labour Party and Brown has said he would be willing to resign if it meant a coalition could be formed, saying it was in the “national interest.”
Brown expressed hope that a new Labour Party leader would be in place by September. Having held the post as PM since 2007 Brown said Thursday’s general election showed that Labour’s inability to secure an overall majority was evidence that he needed to step down.
He has now encouraged the Labour Party to set in motion elections for the party leadership position and he has vowed to remain neutral in that process, refusing to back a particular candidate.
