Today Narconon of Georgia Drug Rehab is launching a new public awareness campaign on the advantages of drug treatment over incarceration for offenders who are drug abusers. This campaign, designed to educate attorneys, law makers and families on the advantages of drug rehab versus incarceration, emphasizes the financial and social advantages to providing treatment in a therapeutic setting, rather than punishment in the prison.
Mary Rieser, the Director of Narconon Drug Rehab states; “The budget of most of the state prison systems is growing, primarily because of drug abuse, without effectively handling the problem of abuse. Obviously this solution is not working and we need more viable alternatives. For example, statistics show that the Narconon program reduces criminal activity, with no criminal activities being reported in one of the studies done on Narconon graduates. The economic and social advantages to getting someone off drugs and helping them lead a productive life are obvious. Let’s save the prison beds for the real criminals and get the drug addicts the help they need.”
Narconon of Georgia started when Ms. Rieser met with an Atlanta judge, who granted permission to release 20 misdemeanor drug offenders on the condition of completing the rehabilitation regimen. To date, hundreds of participants have completed the Narconon of Georgia drug rehab program, many who have come to the program instead of being incarcerated.
“Our program addresses the bio-physical side of addiction through our sauna and exercise program, that helps eliminate or reduce cravings,” stated Ms. Rieser. “Then we emphasize life skills that will keep the addict out of trouble by re-gaining their own personal sense of morals and ethics. Unless we make the client realize that he or she is responsible for their actions, and they then take responsibility for their actions, drugs will be a crutch that will keep them in the vicious cycle of using drugs and breaking laws.”
