Stocks Post Modest Declines Ahead of Fed Decision
Stocks are modestly lower amid caution ahead of the Fed's rate decision later today. The market has been banking on another rate reduction Wednesday afternoon, following the central bank's drastic three-quarter-point cut in the target fed funds rate a week ago. Lackluster guidance from Yahoo, Boeing, and UPS are keeping nervous buyers on the sidelines. Stocks did get an early lift after ADP reported a much-better-than-expected increase in private payrolls, but shares quickly gave back gains following a weak rise in 4Q GDP.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 58.20, or 0.47 percent, to 12,422.10 after rising 273 over Monday and Tuesday. Broader stock indicators also declined. The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 7.42 percent, or 0.54 percent, to 1,354.88, while the Nasdaq composite index declined 9.80, or 0.42 percent, to 2,348.26.
Government bond prices slipped, sending yields higher. The yield on the 10-year benchmark note inched up to 3.69 percent from 3.68 percent late Tuesday.
Crude oil rose 55 cents to $92.19 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
The dollar was mixed against rival currencies, while gold prices dipped.
