BP Oil Spill Leads to Obama Administration Splitting Up Interior Department Agency

The interior department agency that oversees offshore drilling, including the inspection of rigs and monitoring of drill leases, will be split up following a decision made by the Obama administration.

According to reports Interior Secretary Ken Salazar will recommend splitting the Minerals Management Service in order to create an independent branch in charge of enforcing safety rules regarding offshore drilling. As it stands now the MMS is in charge of enforcing drilling safety regulations while at the same time collecting billions of dollars in royalty fees from oil companies, presenting an obvious conflict of interest.

The move comes in the aftermath of a devastating explosion on a Transocean-owned oil rig, the Deepwater Horizon, in the Gulf of Mexico last month. That explosion left eleven oil workers dead and ruptured a BP-owned well that has been pouring oil into the waters for more than two weeks.

On Tuesday both Transocean and BP, as well as Halliburton which had been contracted by BP to work on the rig, will appear on Capitol Hill for Senate hearings. It is expected that all three will blame the other for the explosion.
